This federal Project Grant award of $153,130 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) supports research by the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) on the mechanisms driving the progression of pulmonary fibrosis.
The research aims to determine the cellular origins and molecular drivers of a novel population of Wilms' Tumor 1 (WT1)-expressing subpleural fibroblasts, and to elucidate how these fibroblasts may act as a stromal niche to promote the advancement of pulmonary fibrosis. Additional work will assess the role of subpleural myeloid cells in the progression of this disease. This fundamental research, conducted through a combination of lineage tracing, mouse modeling, and single-cell sequencing, seeks to provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the edge-to-center fibrotic progression characteristic of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
