Project Grant K23HL171952
- This federal Project Grant award of $761,028 from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) under CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research will support a multi-site prospective study on hypoxemia during sleep in adults with sickle cell anemia (SCA). The study aims to examine the prevalence, clinical impact, and response to treatment of sleep-related hypoxemia in this patient population across four institutions, including both urban and rural sites. Key activities will involve...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) provides $818,279 to Brigham & Women's Hospital, a subsidiary of Partners Healthcare System, to conduct research on improving the subtyping and characterization of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The project will leverage data from existing research cohorts and a clinical biobank to quantify the reproducibility of OSA severity markers and derive physiologically...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded a $1,415,112 project grant under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) to evaluate a telehealth-delivered adaptive intervention for improving continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy adherence and health outcomes in adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The project aims to: 1) compare effects of motivational enhancement, device support, and...
- This $782,473 federal Project Grant award from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) supports research to improve understanding of the pathogenesis of sleep apnea using novel imaging techniques during sleep. The project aims to characterize the site and pattern of airway collapse as well as how upper airway anatomy mediates this collapse, which could provide new insights to guide optimal therapies, particularly for patients who cannot tolerate...
- This $254,250 project grant from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) aims to advance understanding of the relationship between neighborhood factors and sleep health disparities among first and second grade students, primarily Black children, living in urban New York City neighborhoods. The study will merge a comprehensive public dataset on neighborhood characteristics (Child Opportunity Index 3.0) with a longitudinal dataset from a...
- This federal Project Grant award for $696,470, provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research), aims to investigate the relationship between prenatal maternal sleep and cardiovascular disease risk in offspring. The University of Denver is the primary awardee, and they have sub-awards with Northwestern University and the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Center. The key objectives are to: 1) examine how prenatal maternal sleep...
- This federal Project Grant award, provided by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research), will fund research to investigate place-based factors contributing to sleep health disparities in the United States. The $177,385 award to Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc., a subsidiary of Partners Healthcare System, will: 1) Estimate sleep health measures and environmental circadian misalignment across different populations and geographies; 2) Examine...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) aims to elucidate the complex relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The $1,296,660 award supports a 24-month research project that will employ a "bed to bench" approach integrating clinical, computational, and in vitro techniques. Key objectives include developing and validating a mathematical model to quantify...
- This Project Grant award of $371,021 from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) supports the development of a continuous respiratory monitoring platform to better classify apnea of prematurity (AOP) in premature newborns. The primary products to be delivered are: 1) a multimodal system and machine learning model to accurately detect and classify the major types of AOP (central, obstructive, and mixed); and 2) an optimized prototype system...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) will provide $156,340.00 over 5 years, starting on June 15, 2025, to Connecticut Children's Medical Center to develop and test a provider-focused intervention to improve health outcomes in pediatric sickle cell disease. The key products and services to be delivered under this award include: Literature reviews on provider communication and health outcomes in pediatric...
This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) provides $210,013 to The Medical University of South Carolina to conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the REPOSE patient navigation intervention. The goal is to test a strategy to improve diagnostic and treatment pathways for children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which affects over 8.9 million U.S. children. The REPOSE intervention utilizes a centralized patient navigator to address individual barriers, provide resources and social support, and facilitate care coordination between clinical teams and parents to improve access to evidence-based SDB treatment. The pilot RCT will enroll 80 parent-child dyads and evaluate the intervention's effectiveness compared to usual care. This project seeks to develop an effective method for reducing barriers to SDB care, particularly for underserved Black children who are disproportionately impacted. The award term runs from September 1, 2025 through August 31, 2029.
