This is a $193,550 federal project grant awarded on February 1, 2025 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The grant is funded under NIDA's Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279).
The purpose of this grant is to develop a peer breastfeeding support intervention for mothers with opioid use disorder (OUD). The project aims to: 1) engage mothers who have successfully breastfed for 3 months to identify facilitators and understand the potential influence of breastfeeding on recovery; 2) facilitate focus groups with OUD providers and counselors to identify key factors for adapting and implementing a peer lactation support model; and 3) conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial of 30 mothers with OUD to test the feasibility, acceptability, fidelity, and preliminary efficacy of the peer lactation support intervention in improving breastfeeding and addiction outcomes. The goal is to develop an evidence-based, tailored breastfeeding support service for this high-risk population to decrease morbidity and mortality.
