- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center $278,333 on August 18, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to assess the longitudinal impact of VRC01 prophylaxis on viral populations and autologous antibody responses in breakthrough infections. The research leverages longitudinal data from the Antibody Mediated Protection (AMP) Trial HVTN 704 and the follow-up Analytic Treatment Interruption (ATI) Trial...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded University of Wisconsin - Madison $449,375 on August 3, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to elucidate the structural mechanisms of respiratory syncytial virus and human metapneumovirus assembly. The project applies cryo-electron tomography, cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy, and cryo-focused ion beam milling, complemented by molecular biology and biochemical approaches, to...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center $323,892 on April 2, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to support a five-year research training program in mathematical modeling of SARS-CoV-2 variant emergence from immunocompromised hosts. The award funds development of a suite of mathematical models to understand mechanisms facilitating generation of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern during prolonged...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded University of Kansas Medical Center Research Institute, Inc. $193,750 on July 7, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct exploratory research on the role of cell-surface glycoRNAs in respiratory syncytial virus infection. The research will define the sequences and secondary structures of glycoRNAs that scaffold nucleolin, an RNA-binding protein and critical RSV entry receptor, on...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center $238,899 on June 8, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct preclinical evaluation of human monoclonal antibodies for herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) therapeutics. The research isolates and characterizes antibody-secreting cells discovered in genital skin tissue up to four months following HSV lesion healing. The project involves comprehensive...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Washington State University $618,650 on August 6, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to conduct research on ZBP1 signaling in respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) triggered host defense and pathogenesis. The research examines how RSV activates the immune sensor protein ZBP1, which triggers necroptosis in infected stromal cells and pyroptosis in myeloid cells. The project investigates...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center $879,998 on July 15, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to investigate the role of mucosal regulatory T cells in modulating tissue-resident memory T cell responses to infection. The research defines the features, fate, mechanisms, and functional consequences of regulatory T cells (Treg) and tissue Treg in anti-viral tissue memory immune responses in mice and...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center $465,116 on April 13, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to develop and evaluate AAV-delivered meganucleases as a therapeutic approach for durable control of genital herpes simplex virus infection. The R21 phase funds research extending prior work targeting HSV-1 to HSV-2, and determining whether intravenous or intrathecal administration is the optimal...
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center $191,376 on August 11, 2026, under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855) to map escape mutations in respiratory syncytial virus fusion protein and monitor for antibody-resistant viral strains. The recipient will develop a deep mutational scanning platform to comprehensively measure the effects of all possible mutations on cell entry and neutralization by clinically relevant RSV antibodies. The work leverages a non-replicative pseudovirus system to enable safe study of viral mutations without use of pathogenic virus. The recipient will use the resulting comprehensive mutation maps to monitor for escape mutations in circulating strains and breakthrough infections occurring in patients receiving prophylactic monoclonal antibodies. This research addresses the risk that widespread monoclonal antibody use will select for viral escape and spread of resistant RSV strains, a major concern for clinical and public health practice as new RSV-targeting therapeutics are deployed. Performance of work occurs in Seattle, Washington. The award covers the period August 11, 2026, through July 31, 2031. This is a project grant supporting investigator-initiated research within NIAID's portfolio for biomedical research and research training in infectious diseases and related areas.
