Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) received a $164,745 Project Grant award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847), effective April 1, 2026 through March 31, 2031. The award funds investigator-initiated research examining the mechanisms of maternal renal and gestational dysfunction following recovered acute kidney injury (AKI). Utilizing an in vivo mouse model of rhabdomyolysis-induced AKI, the research will investigate intrarenal renin-angiotensin system alterations during pregnancy to determine causative factors in gestational complications, placental insufficiency, and subsequent maternal renal dysfunction. The research addresses a significant clinical gap, as currently aggressive fluid resuscitation is the only approved treatment for AKI, which affects up to 15% of hospitalized patients and 60% of critically ill patients. The study is designed to advance understanding of how recovered AKI in women of childbearing age impacts long-term reproductive and renal health outcomes, thereby informing future clinical interventions for this vulnerable population. OHSU's research will be conducted at its Portland, Oregon facility.Summary
