This Project Grant award of $2,461,670.00 from the Defense Health Agency's Military Medical Research and Development program (CFDA 12.420) supports the development of ErythroMer (EM), a dried, bio-inspired artificial red blood cell substitute, by Kalocyte Inc., a biotech startup. The project aims to optimize the lyophilization and reconstitution of EM to improve its oxygen binding and release properties, as well as evaluate its efficacy, pharmacokinetics, dosing, and compatibility with hemostatic adjuncts in various hemorrhagic shock scenarios. Kalocyte is collaborating with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for EM fabrication and Washington University in St. Louis for in vivo testing, and has also received subawards from the University of Maryland, Baltimore to establish EM's efficacy. The goal is to create a multifunctional resuscitation fluid for military and civilian use to address life-threatening blood loss situations.
