The Columbia University History Lab will receive $494,798 from the National Endowment for the Humanities under the Promotion of the Humanities Office of Digital Humanities program to host an Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities from September 2022 through August 2025. The Institute will offer training to archivists and historians through in-person summer workshops on processing and making text data accessible for digital humanities research. Each workshop cohort of approximately 20 people will receive morning hands-on training classes and participate in lunch discussions with experts presenting on the digital turn. Shared readings and discussion seminars will continue conversations. A concluding two-day conference in January 2025 will showcase innovative projects through panel discussions and keynotes. The funding will support Columbia University in leveraging its experience developing open-source tools and workflows for archiving, aggregating, and exploring large digitized and born-digital record collections.
