The University of Texas at Austin was awarded a $148,737 Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Office of Digital Humanities (CFDA 45.169) to create MAYALEX, an interlinked, extensible online etymological dictionary for early Mayan languages. This two-year effort will expand the university's existing digital infrastructure for Indo-European languages, called IELEX, to create user-friendly, publicly available dictionaries that link words through their shared etymologies, starting with the colonial Mayan language Chʼoltı́ʼ. The goal is to develop a functional prototype that enables scholars and non-specialists to study words, explore connections between languages, and browse across or within languages by form or meaning, exporting their discoveries for further study. This project aims to address the lack of digital resources meeting the lexical needs of scholars of early Mesoamerica.
