The Santee Sioux Tribe of Nebraska was awarded a $584,016 Project Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance (CFDA 93.243) program. The grant will fund the Tokaheya Takuye - The Santee Sioux Nation Health and Wellness Center project, which will provide peer recovery support services to individuals and families within the tribe's exterior boundaries. The project will utilize talking circles, educational forums, and culturally informed tools to increase sobriety, address trauma and unresolved grief, promote healthy relationships, and strengthen connections to the tribe's history, language, and understanding of the Creator. The goal is to realize stronger family bonds, improved physical health, and enhanced ability to recognize and regulate emotions among the tribal community. The project will be implemented over a 5-year period, from September 30, 2024 to September 29, 2029.
