The Tolowa Dee-Ni Nation has been awarded a $1,000,000 Project Grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance (CFDA 93.243) program. The grant will fund a comprehensive program called "NAA-T'A NA'LH-NI (Flying Strong) Opioid Response Project" to provide prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery support services for tribal families in Del Norte and Humboldt Counties in California, and Coos, Curry and Josephine Counties in Oregon.
Key elements of the project include: 1) Enhancing availability of residential treatment services for adults and youth with dual diagnoses; 2) Increasing intensive support through peer workers, additional AOD counselors, and transitional housing; and 3) Enhancing harm prevention and reduction efforts by training 100 community members in opioid overdose recognition and naloxone administration, and increasing naloxone availability. The project aims to reduce the incidence of relapse and overdose deaths among the tribal population by delivering culturally sensitive, integrated behavioral health services.
