The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded a $1,391,104 Project Grant under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Projects of Regional and National Significance (CFDA 93.243) program to Generation Schools Network Inc., a non-profit organization based in Denver, Colorado. The grant aims to improve infrastructure for reducing suicides and ultimately preventing suicide deaths among young people up to age 24 in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) community. To achieve the grant's three goals of improving protective factors, infrastructure for suicide prevention, and preventing suicides, Generation Schools Network and EBCI partners will build a suicide prevention implementation team. This team will develop a tribal suicide prevention plan, implement evidence-based suicide prevention programs, provide professional development to school staff, and offer training and education to community members. The grant will also result in increased screening and referrals to treatment through improved coordination of efforts across the tribe. The project period runs from September 30, 2024, to September 29, 2029.
