The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control awarded the City of Albany a $500,000 Lead Hazard Reduction (LHR) Grant Program (CFDA 14.900) to identify and control lead-based paint hazards in privately-owned rental and owner-occupied housing where children under the age of six reside. The key objectives of the 3-year grant are to: (1) target lead hazard control efforts in pre-1960, especially pre-1940, housing units in low-income and minority neighborhoods to reduce the likelihood of elevated blood lead levels in children; (2) utilize cost-effective lead hazard control methods; (3) build local capacity for lead-safe work practices; and (4) develop comprehensive, community-based approaches to integrating the program with other local initiatives. The funding will enable the City of Albany to identify and remediate lead-based paint hazards in over 3,700 low-income homes to protect families with young children.
