This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Project Grant under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) provides $689,106.64 to Purdue University to investigate the impact of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on fish microbiomes. The project aims to assess how PFAS exposure affects microbial diversity in both laboratory experiments on fathead minnows and field sampling of fish populations in the Great Lakes region. The research will result in three peer-reviewed publications covering PFAS impacts on microbial communities, fish gut biotransformation of PFAS precursors, and the broader economic implications for farmed fish. The project also provides hands-on research experiences for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as outreach and dissemination of findings within the Great Lakes region and nationally. Purdue University has included Carleton University's Dr. Amy Rand as a sub-recipient to perform measurements on microbiome samples. The award period runs from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026.
