The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) awarded a $499,360 Project Grant under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) to the University of Tennessee from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2027. The purpose of this grant is to further develop, test, and apply nationwide a newly created modeling framework called the Hydrological-Connectivity-Based Index of Urbanization (HCIU). This novel basin descriptor can reflect the hydrologic effects due to the spatial arrangement of developed and undeveloped areas in a watershed, improving prediction of peak discharges and other flood-related variables in urban and urbanizing watersheds. The researchers will propose additional candidate descriptors to capture the complex effects of urbanization on peak flows, streamline computational procedures, and implement the approach in the USGS StreamStats app used by practitioners. The University of Memphis received a $250,846 sub-award to generate new metrics that incorporate variable urbanization effects on peak flows and high flow characteristics.
