PROJECT TITLE: FY 2024 PROJECTS FOR THE PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL PRESERVATION OF ARIZONA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY DATAPROJECT PERIOD: 6 6 2024 THROUGH 6 5 2025AWARD PURPOSE: THE ARIZONA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY WILL CONDUCT SIX DATA PRESERVATION PROJECTS. FIRST, A TOTAL OF 10 OLDER GEOLOGIC MAP PUBLICATIONS WILL BE UPDATED FROM PAPER SCANS TO MODERN DIGITAL PRODUCTS. SECOND, A TOTAL OF 895 GEOLOGIC PUBLICATIONS FORMERLY HELD BY THE NOW DEFUNCT U.S. GEOSCIENCES INFORMATION NETWORK WILL BE RESCUED AND REPUBLISHED ON TRUSTED ONLINE ARCHIVES. THIRD, APPROXIMATELY 80 CUBIC FEET OF ROCK SPECIMENS FROM ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT COPPER DEPOSITS WILL BE RESCUED AND ARCHIVED. FOURTH, ADDITIONAL CABINETRY TO STORE ROCK SPECIMENS WILL BE ADDED TO EXPAND THE STORAGE CAPACITY OF THE ARIZONA ROCK AND CORE REPOSITORY. FIFTH, DIGITAL ACCESS TO 17,000 GEOLOGIC PUBLICATIONS WILL BE IMPROVED VIA AN UPGRADED WEB PORTAL. SIXTH, A COMPILATION OF MINERAL DEPOSIT DATA FOR COCHISE COUNTY, ARIZONA WILL BE ASSEMBLED AND PUBLISHED TO SUPPORT ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT.ACTIVITIES TO BE PERFORMED: FIRST, LEGACY MAPS WILL BE DIGITALLY TRACED BY UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA STUDENTS, REVIEWED BY STATE GEOLOGISTS, AND RE-RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC ACCORDING TO MODERN DATA STANDARDS. SECOND, AN ARIZONA GEOLOGIST WILL TRIAGE U.S. GEOSCIENCES INFORMATION NETWORK ITEMS FOR PRESERVATION AND EITHER RETURN THESE ITEMS TO THEIR ORIGINAL OWNERS OR PUBLISH THEM ON THE ARIZONA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY ONLINE DOCUMENT REPOSITORY.
