Project Grant G24AP00035
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $435,041 CAREER grant to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) to investigate and evaluate the abiotic and biotic transformations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). The project aims to advance the fundamental understanding of the fate, transport, and reactivity of PFAS, commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," as treated water transits through...
- This Project Grant award for $500,000.00 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) in developing a real-time forecasting system to predict drinking water quality in three Appalachian reservoirs. The project, titled "RAISE: Building Resilience to Earth System Hazards: Forecasting Drinking Water Quality with Real-Time Integrated Catchment Modeling", will use simulations of...
- The Rutgers, The State University Research Financial Services Division was awarded a $558,001 Project Grant under the U.S. Geological Survey's Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805). This 3-year grant, awarded on January 5, 2024, will support research to investigate the occurrence, fate, and transport of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination in aquifers at the USGS Cape Cod Toxic Substances Hydrology Research Site. Key research activities...
- This $558,005 Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) will fund a 3-year study on the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and biomagnification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in natural and constructed wetlands. The key objectives are to: 1) understand if PFAS concentrations increase through the wetland food chain and evaluate the ability of wetlands to remove these chemicals; 2)...
- This $558,203 federal Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) supports research at Purdue University to study the bioaccumulation and biotransformation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in aquatic environments. Key project activities include: Integrating microfluidic sensors for rapid PFAS detection, field sampling of biofilms and macroinvertebrates, identifying factors influencing...
- The U.S. Geological Survey awarded a $619,816 Project Grant under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes (CFDA 15.805) program to The University of Kentucky Research Foundation. The 3-year award, starting on January 16, 2025, will investigate the effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on biogeochemical cycling, fate, and transport in constructed wetlands. Key research objectives include: 1) identifying impacts of wetland biogeochemical processes on PFAS...
- This Project Grant from the US Geological Survey, under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805), provides $469,361 to The Ohio State University Office of Sponsored Programs from January 2023 to January 2026. The funding will support field observations and numerical simulations to enhance understanding of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) deposition impacts on hydrologic systems in Ohio. Researchers will deploy air and plant samplers near...
- This $558,346 Project Grant awarded by the U.S. Geological Survey under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) supports research at the University of Nebraska on the release, adsorption, and biotransformation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the water-sediment interface in agricultural watersheds. The key objectives are to: 1) measure the kinetics of PFAS release from decomposed biosolids and adsorption to sediments under anaerobic...
- The US Geological Survey, through its Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes federal grant program (CFDA 15.805), awarded Purdue University $487,497 for its project titled "PFAS Precursor Bioaccumulation and Biotransformation in Agriculturally Impacted Wetland Food Webs." The project will study the in vivo transformation and ecological effects of polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) precursors in wetlands located in Indiana. Specifically, the researchers...
- This $650,000 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation (CFDA 47.074 - Biological Sciences) to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) supports research to investigate the role of environmental factors in the development of antibiotic resistance among bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants. The key products and services to be delivered under this 5-year award include: Conducting integrated field, laboratory, and computational studies to...
The U.S. Geological Survey is providing a $584,710 Project Grant under the Assistance to State Water Resources Research Institutes program (CFDA 15.805) to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) to conduct research on the environmental transport of contaminants from septic systems into drinking water sources. The key objectives of the 3-year project are to: 1) evaluate hydrogeologic and socioeconomic factors influencing the movement of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and pharmaceuticals from septic systems to streams; 2) quantify the impact of extreme precipitation events on contaminant export from septic systems; and 3) develop indicators to predict septic system vulnerability and water security risks. The research will be conducted in collaboration with the USGS Virginia and West Virginia Water Science Center and George Mason University, which will receive a sub-grant to support student training and education activities. The findings will inform targeted interventions and sanitation infrastructure planning for vulnerable communities in the Northern Virginia region.
