The University of Illinois received a $1,300,004 Project Grant award from the Department of the Interior US Geological Survey under the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation program (CFDA 15.814). The award will fund three priorities over the 2-year project period from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2025:

  1. Moving and re-curating the StratPAL paleontology collection, including digitizing specimens and updating the collection's metadata in online databases. This will benefit researchers studying upper Pleistocene and Quaternary geology in Illinois and surrounding states.

  2. Preserving the TARP core drilled in the Chicago metro area, including upgrading the processing facility, continuing core analysis, and updating the collection's metadata. This will support industry, researchers, and the public working in the Chicago area.

  3. Reuniting and preserving the scattered components of the White County core, which is the standard reference section for the Illinois Basin, through photography, analysis, and documenting the core's details in a wiki page. This will benefit Earth MRI researchers.

The University of Illinois is the sole awardee under this grant and will not have any sub-recipients.
