The Department of Environment & Conservation Tennessee received a $127,257.08 Project Grant award from the U.S. Geological Survey under the National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation program (CFDA 15.814) for the period of July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. Under this award, the Department will preserve and provide access to geological collections through specific activities including compiling metadata and digitizing 500 maps in the Coal Geology Maps Collection, preparing an unpublished geologic map to standards for the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program portal, developing an ArcGIS Online application with information on zinc mining maps and reports, installing new shelving for approximately 25,000 feet of rock core, compiling data on 400 mineral test holes using a prescribed template, and updating metadata records to improve discoverability of collections. The intended beneficiaries are the public, industry, and government agencies through preservation of geologic data that would otherwise require substantial new investment to replicate and which can support various priorities including land use planning, geologic mapping initiatives, and identification of areas for mineral exploration and potential future mining.
