The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded Cornell University a $151,748.73 Project Grant under the Promotion of the Humanities Professional Development federal grant program (CFDA 45.163) for the period of October 1, 2018 through March 31, 2020.
The grant funding supported Cornell University's "SITUATING DEMOCRATIC WRITERS IN WESTERN NEW YORK: TOCQUEVILLE, COOPER, STANTON, AND DOUGLASS" project. This project aimed to promote better teaching and research of American history and culture through examining the works and legacy of four prominent 19th century writers - Alexis de Tocqueville, James Fenimore Cooper, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Frederick Douglass - in their historical context within Western New York. The Office of Sponsored Programs at Cornell University oversaw delivery of the project objectives supported by this NEH grant.
