Once potential skyrmion compounds are identified by Leslie Schoop and Stephen Wilson, we will carry out STM studies. 1) The first step is to cleave samples and carry out regular STM imaging and spectroscopy to verify that the samples are compatible with STM studies. 2) IF the samples cleave well and can be imaged, we will carry out spin-polarized STM imaging and spectroscopy. We will look for signatures of magnetic ordering as well as skyrmions. 3) We will carry out imaging and spectroscopic studies as a function of magnetic field and temperatures to pin down the phase diagram.
