Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) was awarded a $400,000 project grant from the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management to develop a data-driven framework for identifying and remediating soil contaminated by leached metals near coal ash impoundments. The three-year award, made on October 1, 2022 under the Fossil Energy Research and Development program (CFDA #81.089), will support Virginia Tech's efforts to minimize environmental impacts from fossil fuels through research, development, demonstration and deployment approaches. Specifically, the University will leverage multiscale data and phytotechnology to develop solutions for assessing and remediating heavy metal contamination in soils in proximity to coal ash storage sites. Outcomes from this work have the potential to inform sustainable remediation practices that mitigate fossil fuel waste impacts on surrounding lands.
