The Government of Guam Bureau of Statistics and Plans was awarded a $178,750 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior Insular Affairs under the Economic, Social, and Political Development of the Territories federal grant program (CFDA 15.875). The funding will be used to purchase two Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Unmanned Aerial Systems to enhance field operations for the Guam Fire and Police Departments. Specifically, the drones will allow for better emergency response planning and strategy, increase response times, enhance preparedness capabilities, and help identify hazardous situations. This will support public safety efforts such as accident reconstruction, surveillance, mapping, crime scene analysis, and provide aerial perspectives to aid in search and rescue operations, assessing wildfires and disaster areas, and monitoring hazardous materials situations. The grant aims to leverage the in-house drone operation certifications of Guam Police and Fire Department personnel. The drones are expected to fundamentally change and improve how the departments conduct safe, efficient operations in line with the federal grant program's focus on public safety, emergency response, and capacity building in U.S. territories.
