The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded a $4,000,000 Project Grant under the Congressional Directives (CFDA 93.493) program to Marathon County, Wisconsin. The grant funding will support the construction of a new Regional Forensic Science Center (RFSC) focused on enhancing the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of death investigations in central and northern Wisconsin. The RFSC will provide forensic pathology services, including autopsies, and serve as a regional hub for training and continuing education opportunities for coroners, medical examiners, law enforcement, district attorneys, and emergency medical/health providers. Key services to be delivered through the RFSC include forensic autopsies, livery services, decedent storage, tissue procurement, expert forensic testimony, forensic consultations, regional mass fatality preparedness, and medical research support. This regional forensic center is expected to improve the death investigation process and enhance educational opportunities for counties in central and northern Wisconsin. The project has an anticipated completion date of September 29, 2027.
