The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMass Medical) was awarded a $15,715,230 National Institutes of Health (NIH) C06 Construction Support Program grant to renovate existing space and construct a new biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory for viral pathogen research. The new facility will address increased demand on UMass Medical's existing BSL-3 research infrastructure and enable continued critical studies on SARS-CoV-2, viral hemorrhagic fevers, and other pandemic-potential viruses. UMass Medical is a leading institution for infectious disease research and has received numerous NIH and other federal awards to support this work. The proposed facility will enhance safety, resilience, and productivity of UMass Medical's BSL-3 research core, and enable translation of findings to develop novel prevention and therapeutic strategies through the institution's RNA therapeutics and drug resistance institutes, as well as partnership with MassBiologics for vaccine and biologic therapy development.
