Mississippi State University and its partners, the Fort Worth Zoo, North Carolina Zoo, and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, will use a $100,006 Project Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services' National Leadership Grants program to hire and train students from underserved communities to transition into leadership roles focused on biological collections management. Through November 2022, students will research amphibian collections at the partner organizations to learn about sustainable reproduction, husbandry, and genetic management. The team will share study results on a project website and across digital media platforms. This will help promote a more diverse and inclusive workforce in the long run while aiding COVID-19 economic recovery in the short term. Key indicators of success include the number of trainees graduated and hired, new digital products created, and positive impacts on genetic collection management.
