THE REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN WILL CONDUCT A LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT LCA OF MAPLE SYRUP PRODUCTION. PARTNERS WILL RECRUIT PRODUCERS AND INVENTORY THEIR OPERATIONS OVER TWO PRODUCTION SEASONS ESTIMATING ENERGY USE AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THEIR PRODUCTION SYSTEMS. VARIABLES CONSIDERED INCLUDE METHOD OF SAP COLLECTION PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY AND FUEL USAGE. THESE ESTIMATES WILL BE USED TO DEVELOP AN ONLINE CALCULATOR. INVENTORY OF A THIRD PRODUCTION SEASON WILL EVALUATE EFFECTS OF ALTERED PRACTICES. THE CALCULATOR WILL BENEFIT PRODUCERS BY PROVIDING NEW TOOLS TO HIGHLIGHT OPPORTUNITIES TO LOWER FUEL COSTS REDUCE EMISSIONS AND INCREASE PROFITABILITY. THE RESULTS OF THIS PROJECT WILL BE PRESENTED AT AT LEAST ONE CONFERENCE STATE MAPLE ASSOCIATIONS AND ACADEMIC AND MAPLE SYRUP TRADE JOURNALS.
