This Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities will support the establishment of an undergraduate laboratory and curriculum at the University of Iowa Center for the Book. The University of Iowa will receive $150,000 under the Promotion of the Humanities Teaching and Learning Resources and Curriculum Development program to develop a dedicated undergraduate workspace and new introductory course on global print cultures paired with an existing course on global manuscript cultures. Through hands-on learning in the new laboratory, students will deepen their understanding of key humanities themes such as cultural interpretation and transformation of ideas over time and across cultures. The three-year award beginning June 2022 also aims to strengthen humanities education at the university through collaborative connections between faculty, curators, book artists, engineers, scientists, and librarians teaching with material texts.
