The Comanche Nation Language Department (CNLD) was awarded a $384,242.48 Project Grant from the Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs Central Office under the Indian Economic Development federal grant program (CFDA 15.032) to expand its existing Comanche language curriculum and develop the first ever online Comanche Level 1 course. CNLD will utilize archival audio and video recordings along with minimal new recordings to create five instructional units consisting of approximately 10 lessons each on the Transparent Language online platform. In partnership with the nonprofit organization 7000 Languages, CNLD will make the complete Comanche Level 1 course accessible worldwide upon project completion by December 31, 2023. The funding will allow CNLD to build upon past online learning successes and address gaps in intergenerational language transmission by providing sequential, developmentally appropriate Comanche instruction that simultaneously targets adolescents and parent-aged adults.
