The California State University, East Bay Foundation, Inc. was awarded a $915,786 Project Grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 9 under the Geographic Programs - San Francisco Bay Water Quality Improvement Fund (CFDA 66.126). Through this grant, the Foundation and its university partners will engage with indigenous community members to plan, implement, and sustain culturally responsive water and land use initiatives to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Key activities include promoting environmental stewardship of Galindo Creek, improving stormwater reuse processes, increasing green infrastructure, and supporting indigenous food ways to restore food sovereignty and reduce food insecurity. Anticipated deliverables include adding rainwater capture and storage structures, permeable walkways, interpretive signage, and a native plant propagation station in the Wolwonja Ecocultural Garden. The grant also includes sub-awards to the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District ($100,000) and Mak-'amham/Cafe Ohlone Tribal Members ($100,000) to facilitate community engagement, advise on cultural practices, and collaborate on project implementation and evaluation.
