The Lower Brule Sioux Tribe received a $565,000 Formula Grant award from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 8 under the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) National Grants program. The Tribe will use the funding to replace 21 diesel generators sets with rotary phase single to three-phase converters to provide all-electric power for pivot irrigation systems on the reservation. This will eliminate diesel emissions by 100% and reduce diesel consumption by nearly 1 million gallons over the life of the project. The replacement project will significantly decrease emissions of diesel particulate matter and other pollutants such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons from the generators. The award period is from April 1, 2021 through December 31, 2023.
