The Environmental Protection Agency Region 4 awarded the Alabama Department of Environmental Management $646,000 under the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Prevention, Detection, and Compliance Program (CFDA 66.804) federal Project Grant. The funding supports ADEM's operation of its UST program through September 2023 to prevent petroleum and hazardous substance releases from underground storage tanks.
Specifically, ADEM will use the funding to conduct approximately 481 facility compliance inspections, provide compliance assistance, and carry out enforcement activities. The inspections and compliance support aim to encourage proper underground storage tank operation and maintenance, as well as monitoring in accordance with regulations. The program also works to develop Alabama's UST program to operate in lieu of the federal program. Overall, the grant aims to reduce environmental contamination risks and support community health through preventing underground storage tank releases. No subawards are included in the agreement.
