DESCRIPTION:THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO UNDERSTAND THE CUMULATIVE HEALTH IMPACTS OF CHEMICAL AND NON-CHEMICAL EXPOSURES EXACERBATED BY CLIMATE CHANGE AMONG THE MOST VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES IN ATLANTA AND TO DEVELOP SUITABLE INTERVENTION PROGRAMS TO REDUCE EXPOSURES.ACTIVITIES:THIS PROJECT WILL 1) CREATE AN INDEX AND MAP AT THE NEIGHBORHOOD LEVEL FOCUSED ON THE CUMULATIVE CHEMICAL AND NON-CHEMICAL EXPOSURE OF INDIVIDUALS IN ATLANTA AND HOW THEIR HEALTH IS ADVERSELY IMPACTED BY ELEVATED AIR POLLUTION DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE; 2) SEEK TO UNDERSTAND HOW HIGHLY SUSCEPTIBLE INDIVIDUALS WITH CHRONIC DISEASE PERCEIVE AND MANAGE THE EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL, NON-CHEMICAL, AND CLIMATE-RELATED FACTORS ON THEIR MENTAL HEALTH, ASTHMA, AND OBESITY-SENSITIVE CONDITIONS; AND 3) FACILITATE COMMUNITY-LED EDUCATION INITIATIVES AND INTERVENTIONS TO EMPOWER THE COMMUNITY AND INCREASE RESILIENCE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS HEALTH EFFECTS.SUBRECIPIENT:SUBAWARD TO ECO-ACTION ($455,773) FOR LEADING COMMUNITY-ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES AS LISTED IN THE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PLAN. SUBAWARD TO SPELMAN COLLEGE ($134,408) TO PROVIDE THE PRELIMINARY DATA ON CUMULATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL VULNERABILITY ANALYSIS NEEDED FOR OBJECTIVE 1. IN ADDITION, SPELMAN WILL LEAD THE COMMUNITY LEVEL ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD DATA COLLECTION USING THE PROCTOR CREEK CITIZEN SCIENCE APP. OUTCOMES:DELIVERABLES INCLUDE ANNUAL AND FINAL RESEARCH REPORTS, PEER REVIEWED JOURNAL PUBLICATIONS, AND SCIENTIFIC REPORTS AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS AND POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR STATE AND LOCAL PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCIES, ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGERS, HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, AND COMMUNITY PLANNERS AND LEADERS. EXPECTED OUTCOMES INCLUDE A REDUCTION OF HARMFUL POLLUTANT EXPOSURES AND A GENERAL IMPROVEMENT IN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AMONG RESIDENTS WITH PREEXISTING HEALTH CONDITIONS IN THE ATLANTA AREA. INTENDED BENEFICIARIES INCLUDE STATE AND LOCAL PUBLIC HEALTH AGENCIES, ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGERS, HEALTH PROFESSIONALS, COMMUNITY LEADERS, AND VULNERABLE SUBPOPULATIONS IN THE ATLANTA AREA.
