The University of Wisconsin System received a $100,000 Project Grant award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Shared Services Center under the Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Federal Grant Program (CFDA 43.001) on November 7, 2024. The award is intended to support the university in executing a balanced science program based on discipline-specific guidance from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, as well as priorities and direction from Congress. The funding enables the university to participate as a key partner and enabler in NASA's exploration initiative, focusing on scientific research of the Moon, lunar orbit, Mars, and beyond. Additionally, the award supports the university's efforts to advance discovery in emerging fields by identifying and exploiting cross-disciplinary opportunities between traditional science disciplines, and to develop a directorate-wide, target-user focused approach to applied programs, including Earth science applications, space weather, planetary defense, and space situational awareness. The award has a performance period of one year, with a completion date of November 6, 2025.
