The National Academy of Sciences will convene an ad hoc committee under a $325,000 project grant from the Agricultural Research Service to review dietary reference intakes for energy. The committee will assess human requirements for energy intake from sources including alcohol and gut microbiota digestible dietary fiber, as well as energy expenditure. The review will consider factors like age, sex, body size, body composition, physical activity levels, and race/ethnicity in establishing requirements. The committee will also evaluate energy needs for growth, pregnancy, postpartum periods, weight loss or gain, and disease recovery. Special consideration will be given to age-sex groups across the lifespan. This work supports the Agricultural Research Service's Agricultural Research Basic and Applied Research program (CFDA #10.001) by providing scientific and technical evaluations to inform agricultural research goals.
