- This Project Grant award of $529,722.00 from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) will support research to develop advanced artificial intelligence models to predict the formation and evolution of thunderstorms. The project aims to create a prognostic, diagnostic, and generative deep learning nowcasting tool for convection initiation that can quantify the predictability and uncertainty of these predictions. The research will also seek to discover the physical and...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Florida a $353,178 Project Grant (CFDA 47.050, Geosciences) effective October 1, 2025, through September 30, 2028, to develop a next-generation generative downscaling framework for geoscience data. This collaborative research initiative combines diffusion-based generative models with physical constraints and probabilistic uncertainty quantification to produce...
- The University of Florida was awarded a $292,448 project grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences. The grant is part of the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to support basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences. Under the three-year award beginning August 1, 2021, the University will research thermodynamic modification of winter storms in a warmer climate. The Division of Sponsored Research will administer the funding on behalf...
- This $817,212 National Science Foundation project grant supports research at Pennsylvania State University to improve understanding and forecasting of downdrafts in deep convection. The three-year award under the NSF Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) aims to advance fundamental knowledge of the processes contributing to vertical air motions in thunderstorms. Through theoretical analysis and idealized simulations, the university researchers will study the influence of atmospheric properties on...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences awarded the University of Utah $692,890 on August 15, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to advance data assimilation techniques for numerical weather modeling and forecasting in mountainous terrain. The project develops physics-aware data assimilation strategies tailored to stratified, terrain-driven boundary layers, addressing limitations in how existing assimilation formulations account for terrain...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Florida $498,884 on August 1, 2026, to develop a data-centric geoscience foundation model for predicting extreme weather events including floods and droughts under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The project will construct an artificial intelligence framework using event-manifold learning to encode extreme events as latent trajectories with spatial footprint and contextual drivers. Lightweight...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a 3-year, $575,150 Project Grant to Florida State University (FSU) under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to study the impacts of ocean surface currents and waves on atmospheric boundary layer processes over the Gulf Stream. The research aims to determine how coupling of winds, currents, and waves modifies the budgets of heat, moisture, and momentum, as well as the extent to which vertical transport within the atmospheric boundary layer...
The National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences awarded Florida State University $422,645 on August 15, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to apply advanced data assimilation techniques to the study of nocturnal thunderstorm development and forecasting. The research will implement novel non-Gaussian data assimilation algorithms for boundary layer profiler data to better incorporate ground-based remote sensing measurements into numerical weather prediction models. The project addresses key forecasting challenges posed by nocturnal convection—thunderstorms that develop after sunset—by investigating the relative importance of observed temperature, moisture, and wind variables in the nocturnal convection initiation environment, testing quantile conserving ensemble filters to constrain unobserved variables and reduce model imbalances, and examining how nocturnal thunderstorm predictability depends on synoptic forcing and initiation mechanisms. The work includes graduate student workforce development. Performance occurs in Tallahassee, Florida through July 31, 2029. No sub-awards are planned.
