- This $314,692 National Science Foundation award under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund collaborative research between Rutgers University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, West Virginia University, and Montclair State University to develop machine learning tools and models for predicting geoeffective solar eruptions, geomagnetic indices, and thermospheric density fluctuations. Key products and services include synthesizing vector magnetograms from ground- and space-based solar...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) grant award provides $593,864 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) from September 2024 to August 2027. The project will develop an AI-driven framework called SolarDM to generate high-resolution, high-cadence vector magnetograms of the solar chromosphere and photosphere. These AI-generated products will provide valuable data on the Sun's magnetic field to significantly advance the understanding and prediction...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation's Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure awarded $199,534 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology on July 1, 2025, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) for collaborative research on cyberinfrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled prediction of extreme space weather events. The project, extending through June 30, 2028, develops an integrated computational...
- This $212,120 National Science Foundation Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) funds research into the impacts of atmospheric waves and geomagnetic disturbances on space weather conditions. Led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in collaboration with Clemson University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2025, the research will advance...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded The Research Foundation For The State University of New York $677,967 on August 1, 2026, to develop physics-informed artificial intelligence emulators for stratosphere-troposphere coupling under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The project addresses a critical gap in current AI weather and climate models: they forecast near-surface conditions accurately but fail to represent the stratosphere and its connection to...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences awarded Massachusetts Institute of Technology $120,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research linking lower-atmosphere weather to space weather through mesoscale modeling and artificial intelligence. The project provides the first systematic investigation of how gravity waves generated by more than 400 meteorological events evolve through the atmosphere and...
- This Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric and Geospace Sciences, under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050), provides $550,926 to the New Jersey Institute of Technology to develop deep learning tools and models for understanding solar flare initiations. Over a three-year period from September 2022 to August 2025, the awardee will train graduate students and high school interns while undertaking five interrelated tasks. These include creating...
The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded New Jersey Institute of Technology $448,384 on August 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to develop artificial intelligence–enabled methods for forecasting thermospheric density from several hours to several days ahead with uncertainty quantification and explainability. The project will couple physics-aware density models with probabilistic predictions of solar and geomagnetic drivers, propagating driver uncertainty through nonlinear forecasting mappings to produce calibrated density forecasts and uncertainty estimates. A second component will enable multi-day ensemble forecasting using solar imagery and heliospheric inputs including solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field data to generate probabilistic scenarios for geomagnetic drivers that will drive ensembles of thermospheric density. The work will support space-weather preparedness and sustainable space operations while generating open-source models, datasets, and analysis tools made publicly available. The project includes workforce training for postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and undergraduate students in artificial intelligence, uncertainty quantification, solar image processing, and thermospheric science, along with educational outreach to high-school teachers and students through hands-on research, seminars, tutorials, and outreach activities. Work is performed in Newark, New Jersey, with a period of performance from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029.
