Project Grant 2612694
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Rhode Island $395,998 on September 1, 2026, to investigate salt marsh geomorphic response to rapid sea-level rise using the 1700 Cascadia earthquake as a natural laboratory under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The project measures lag times between sea-level rise caused by coseismic subsidence and salt marsh response preserved in sediment records from the Oregon Coast. Work involves stratigraphic...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded the University of Washington $410,900 on August 1, 2026, through the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to investigate the structure and properties of the Cascadia plate interface by analyzing exhumed paleo-megathrust fault systems in the Olympic Mountains of Washington State. The research team will examine fossil fault rocks to characterize the signature of earthquake processes and map fault geometry in detail, focusing on...
- The University of Washington was awarded a $271,960 two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050). The grant will support collaborative research to study constraints on interseismic locking near the trench on the Oregon segment of the Cascadia Subduction Zone using seafloor geodesy (GNSS-A). As the awardee, the University of Washington will leverage its expertise in ocean sciences and geosciences...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $261,123 Project Grant under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to the University of Oregon (UO) to conduct a comprehensive study of the Cascadia subduction zone, focusing on seismic and tsunami activity around the year 1700 CE. The key objectives are to: Map high-resolution paleotsunami deposits at two key locations along the Cascadia subduction zone, and Execute thousands of advanced tsunami inundation models to test hypotheses about...
- The National Science Foundation awarded a $695,977 project grant to the University of Washington for research titled "Nearshore Plume Dynamics: Airborne Observations and Modeling of Surf-Shelf Exchange." The three-year award runs from June 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024 under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The University of Washington will utilize the funding to conduct airborne observations and modeling of the exchange between surf zone and continental shelf waters. This work will...
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $274,364 Project Grant to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) under its Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The objective of this 3-year award, commencing on May 1, 2024, is to conduct a comprehensive study of the Cascadia subduction zone, focusing on seismic and tsunami activity around the year 1700 CE. UNCW will carry out high-resolution mapping of paleotsunami deposits at two key locations along the Cascadia subduction zone...
- This two-year Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Ocean Sciences, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), provides $100,459 to the University of Washington to support collaborative research building a new three-dimensional subsurface framework for the Cascadia Subduction Zone through integrated analysis of data from the 2021 Cascadia Seismic Imaging Experiment (CASIE21). Key products include a regional-scale structural interpretation of offshore Cascadia from...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Washington received an $880,490 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Ocean Sciences under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) awarded August 15, 2025, to develop and test multi-span distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology on the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Regional Cabled Array off the Oregon coast. The primary deliverable is a three-month pilot study demonstrating advanced DAS capabilities that can...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded the University of Washington $334,964 on September 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program to investigate deformation of Earth's rigid outer shell as it sinks into the mantle beneath the northern Andes using naturally deformed xenolith rocks. The project will determine the rheological properties of a lithospheric section below the North Andean Arc in southern Colombia by analyzing xenoliths brought to the surface by volcanic...
- The University of Washington was awarded a $685,684 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences to support the research project "BEYOND SALT: EFFECTS OF ESTUARINE CIRCULATION AND MIXING TIMESCALES ON BIOGEOCHEMISTRY." The grant period runs from January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2024. The funding supports basic research within the NSF's Geosciences program (CFDA #47.050), which aims to expand understanding of the integrated Earth system through...
The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded the University of Washington $441,394 on September 1, 2026, to measure salt marsh geomorphic response to rapid sea-level rise using the 1700 Cascadia earthquake as a natural laboratory. The research will use stratigraphic analysis and age-dating of sediment cores from the Cascadia margin integrated with numerical modeling to quantify lag times between coseismic subsidence and salt marsh reestablishment of dynamic equilibrium with relative sea level, and to determine whether transitions between intertidal zones occur slowly and linearly or rapidly and nonlinearly. Results will apply broadly to marshes globally and inform paleo-sea-level and paleoseismic reconstructions. The project will train the next generation of geoscientists and co-develop actionable coastal management strategies with land managers. The University of Washington's Office of Sponsored Programs is the recipient. Performance occurs in Seattle, Washington, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028. No sub-recipients are planned. The award is funded under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050), which supports basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences.
