- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded $223,204 to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on August 1, 2026, for collaborative geologic research investigating Eocene arc initiation during plate reorganization in southern Alaska under the Geosciences program. The research team will collect detailed sedimentologic and structural field data and bedrock and modern river sand samples from the ~50- to 25-million-year-old Aleutian-Meshik arc and forearc basin on the...
- The University of Alaska Anchorage will receive $365,000 from the National Science Foundation under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to conduct collaborative research developing capacity for planning and adapting to riverbank erosion and its consequences in the Yukon River Basin from January 2022 through December 2026. As part of its basic research in atmospheric, earth, and ocean sciences, the NSF Geosciences program supports projects that strengthen understanding of integrated Earth...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded a $188,294 project grant to The University of New Mexico under the Geosciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.050) for the period of August 1, 2022 through July 31, 2024. The grant will support research to investigate structure and seismicity within the southern region of the 1964 Great Alaska earthquake rupture area using a dense node array. Specifically, the grantee will reanalyze seismic data collected in 2019 by 400...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Ocean Sciences awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $118,653 on September 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to image the plate interface across the 1964 Alaska earthquake rupture zone. The project will acquire long-offset multi-channel seismic reflection and wide-angle ocean bottom seismometer data spanning the entire rupture zone of the magnitude 9.2 1964 Alaska subduction zone earthquake—the largest...
- This Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) in the amount of $346,273 supports a collaborative research project investigating the long-term evolution of the Denali Fault Zone in Alaska. The University of Alaska Fairbanks will integrate quantitative structural and kinematic analyses with high-resolution pressure-temperature-time histories of metamorphic rocks to better understand how moderately dipping collisional sutures can transition into...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary Bucknell University received a $131,757 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Division of Earth Sciences under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2028. This collaborative research initiative will produce geochemical, sedimentological, and paleontological data from Late Devonian rock formations in the Appalachian Basin (Pennsylvania and Ohio) to establish age frameworks, evaluate glaciogenic...
- This $175,416 project grant from the National Science Foundation's Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) will fund research at Cornell University from August 2022 to July 2024. The university will investigate structure and seismicity within the southern region of the 1964 Great Alaska earthquake rupture zone using data from a dense array of seismic sensors deployed in Kodiak Island, Alaska. Researchers will reanalyze 2019 data from 400 instruments to identify small earthquakes and precisely locate...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of New Mexico $743,813 on September 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to image the plate interface across the 1964 Alaska earthquake rupture zone and determine the causes for changes in slip behavior between locked and creeping sections of the megathrust. The project will acquire long-offset multichannel seismic reflection and wide-angle ocean bottom seismometer data spanning the entire...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded the University of Alaska Fairbanks $294,141 on January 15, 2027, under the Integrative Activities program (CFDA 47.083) to conduct geomechanical research on permafrost-influenced deep-seated landslides in central Alaska. The project provides a fellowship to a research assistant professor and training for a graduate student at UAF in collaboration with Professor Demian Saffer at the University of Texas at Austin. The...
The National Science Foundation Office of Integrative Activities awarded Bucknell University $376,648 on August 1, 2026, for collaborative research investigating Eocene arc initiation during plate reorganization in southern Alaska, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050). The research team will collect sedimentologic, structural, and geochemical field data from the Aleutian-Meshik Arc and forearc basin on the Alaska Peninsula to determine the spatial-temporal evolution of Paleocene–Eocene subsidence, magmatism, and deformation, and to decipher linkages between upper-plate processes and approximately 50-million-year-old Pacific-wide plate reorganization models associated with initiation of the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone. Field methods include collection of bedrock and modern river sand samples. Results will be disseminated through academic presentations and papers, and public talks in rural Alaskan villages and Katmai National Park to promote awareness of geohazards and mineral and energy resources in Alaska. Performance is based at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, with a period of performance from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029.
