The award funds development of new theoretical frameworks to explain parameter hierarchies in the Standard Model and identify dark matter candidates, determination of testable predictions at high-energy...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded The Trustees of Princeton University $510,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to fund theoretical physics research activities of Professors Igor Klebanov, Simone Giombi, and Herman Verlinde. The award supports research exploring quantum field theory, conformal field theory, and their applications to quantum models of black holes, cosmology, and quantum information theory. The...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded Massachusetts Institute of Technology $400,000 on July 15, 2026, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to conduct experimental particle physics research at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The MIT-LHCb group will make precision measurements of particles containing heavy quarks to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model, including potential dark-sector particles that could help explain dark matter....
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Physics awarded $540,000 to the University of California, Berkeley under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) beginning September 1, 2025 and concluding August 31, 2028. This Project Grant supports theoretical physics research conducted by Professors Hitoshi Murayama and Lawrence J. Hall that aims to connect experimental data from major research facilities with overarching theoretical...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded Lehigh University $200,000 on August 15, 2026, to support research by Professors Timm Wrase and Sera Cremonini under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The award funds theoretical research in string theory, quantum gravity, and holography. Wrase and Cremonini will investigate which low-energy laws of physics are consistent with quantum gravity; how string theory illuminates inflation and dark energy; how black...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded New York University $300,000 on August 15, 2026, through the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to support theoretical research in physics beyond the Standard Model. Professors Joshua Ruderman and Neal Weiner will conduct research spanning laboratory, astrophysical, and cosmological probes of new physics, with focus on interpreting data from the Large Hadron Collider, emerging telescopes and detectors, and new...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded Cornell University $680,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to support theoretical particle physics research at Ithaca, New York through July 31, 2028. The award funds research activities of four faculty members: Professors Csaba Csaki, Yuval Grossman, Liam McAllister, and Maxim Perelstein. Research areas include mathematical aspects of quantum mechanics and gravity, as well as...
The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded $150,000 to Trustees of Tufts College on August 15, 2026, to support theoretical cosmology research conducted by Professor Mark Hertzberg under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The award funds investigation of fundamental physics questions through development of theoretical models and comparison against cosmological and astrophysical data. Hertzberg will examine new models of cosmic acceleration involving ultralight scalar fields and compare them to cosmological data, including data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). The work will also explore and constrain possible new long-range forces between dark matter particles mediated by light carriers, and will constrain corrections to general relativity treated as an effective field theory using theoretical arguments and gravitational wave observations. The project involves graduate and undergraduate students in model analysis and computational work. Research is performed in Medford, Massachusetts, with a period of performance from August 15, 2026, through July 31, 2028. No sub-awards are planned. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
