The principal awardee, the University of Colorado, will couple two widely used community codes - ASPECT (originally for simulating mantle dynamics) and LANDLAB (for modeling surface processes) - to enable...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Earth Sciences awarded Colorado State University $299,919 on July 1, 2026, under the Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) to investigate the tectonic evolution of the Ancestral Rocky Mountain system. The research examines fault geometry, kinematics, and deformation structures across four field areas in southern and central Colorado along the Ancestral Uncompahgre uplift margins, focusing on late Paleozoic (Pennsylvanian-Permian) structures formed 325 to...
- This $713,476 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) supports the development of new computational methods to simulate and study the dynamic interplay between Earth's surface and interior processes. The grant enables the coupling of two widely used community software packages - ASPECT for modeling mantle dynamics and long-term tectonics, and LANDLAB for simulating surface processes. The...
- This $193,783 Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program, under CFDA 47.070, supports the development of new computational methods to simulate and advance the understanding of the dynamic interplay between Earth's surface and interior processes. The award enables the coupling of two widely used community codes - ASPECT for modeling mantle dynamics and long-term tectonic processes, and LANDLAB for simulating...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences program (CFDA 47.050) award of $105,647 to Clemson University provides funding to develop new computational methods for simulating the dynamic interplay between the Earth's surface and interior processes. The project, titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: FRAMEWORKS: COUPLING BULK AND SURFACE PROCESSES IN SIMULATING THE SOLID EARTH WITH ASPECT AND LANDLAB", aims to couple two widely used open-source software packages - ASPECT (for modeling...
- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Geosciences (CFDA 47.050) Project Grant award to the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) is funding the development of new computational methods to simulate and advance the understanding of the dynamic interplay between Earth's surface and interior processes. The $123,880 award, running from September 1, 2024 through August 31, 2028, will couple two widely used open-source community software packages - ASPECT and LANDLAB - to...
- Colorado State University was awarded a three-year, $234,907 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop efficient and robust computational tools for subdiffusive transport in poroelastic media. Under this award, CSU will design, analyze, implement, and apply a family of novel numerical methods to simulate multi-scale, multi-physics processes involving solid displacement, fluid pressure, and substance concentration in...
- The National Science Foundation Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure awarded a $2.56 million Project Grant to the University of Colorado Boulder to support the COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: FRAMEWORKS: OPENEARTHSCAPE - TRANSFORMATIVE CYBERINFRASTRUCTURE FOR MODELING AND SIMULATION IN THE EARTH-SURFACE SCIENCE COMMUNITIES project. The award, made on October 1, 2021 under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering federal grant program (CFDA 47.070), will provide funding through September...
- The University of Colorado was awarded a $316,331 project grant from the National Science Foundation Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure to support research titled "COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: ELEMENTS: EXHUME: EXTRACTION FOR HIGH-ORDER UNFITTED FINITE ELEMENT METHODS." The three-year award, issued on June 1, 2021 with a completion date of May 31, 2024, will fund research activities under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA #47.070). Specifically, the...
The National Science Foundation Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure awarded Colorado State University $102,693 on August 1, 2026, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070) to develop improved numerical solution algorithms for the Advanced Solver for Planetary Evolution, Convection, and Tectonics (ASPECT) software package. The award funds enhancements to linear and nonlinear solvers within ASPECT, an open-source modular software tool that simulates Earth's solid interior and planetary processes at high performance computing scales. The improvements enable geodynamics researchers to model complex phenomena including earthquake hazards, critical mineral and energy resource distribution, and long-term carbon cycle evolution. The project also supports creation of training materials for geoscientists and space scientists to develop their own simulations of Earth and other planets, moons, and asteroids. Work is performed in Fort Collins, Colorado, with a period of performance from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029. Colorado State University's Sponsored Programs division, the university's research arm, is the prime recipient.
