- This National Science Foundation (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences Program (CFDA 47.049) Project Grant award provides $251,928 to the University of Chicago to conduct collaborative research on combining galaxy and cosmic microwave background surveys to obtain precise and robust constraints on cosmology - the distribution of matter throughout the universe. The research team will analyze complementary measurements of galaxy positions, gravitational lensing of galaxies, gravitational lensing...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Astronomical Sciences awarded Northwestern University $378,692 on September 1, 2026, to conduct fundamental physics research on the circumgalactic medium surrounding galaxies under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The project uses galaxy formation simulations and observational comparisons to test competing physical models of how halo gas transitions between cooler and hotter forms, and how stellar and active galactic...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded the University of Maryland, College Park $148,384 on September 1, 2026, for collaborative research optimizing the design of the Southern Wide-Field Gamma-Ray Observatory (SWGO) in Chile under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The project conducts risk-reduction and engineering prototyping for the observatory's core water Cherenkov detector (WCD) array, including extreme weather testing of a corrugated...
- The National Science Foundation Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences awarded Carnegie Institution of Washington $980,286 on September 1, 2026, to extend a three-telescope intensity interferometry prototype into a six-telescope pathfinder array at the Weizmann Observatory. The project, conducted under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049), advances intensity interferometry techniques to image bright stars at extremely high resolution by measuring photon...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded the University of Chicago $195,999 on August 15, 2026, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to support the Dark Matter in CCDs at Modane (DAMIC-M) experiment, a collaborative search for light dark matter particles using silicon charge-coupled device detectors. The award funds the University of Chicago's leadership and participation in DAMIC-M, which operates a several-hundred-gram detector at the...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Physics awarded The University of Chicago $116,224 on September 1, 2026, for the first year of the DarkSide-20K collaborative dark-matter detection experiment under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049). The award funds transition activities from construction to scientific operation of a dual-phase liquid-argon time-projection chamber designed to detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). Funded activities include...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Astronomical Sciences awarded The Johns Hopkins University a $1,096,498 Project Grant under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences federal grant program (CFDA 47.049) to advance technologies for measuring the largest angular scale cosmic microwave background. The two-year award, which began on September 1, 2021, will support development and fabrication of enhanced silicone lenses to measure the cosmic microwave background. Additionally, the...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Astronomical Sciences awarded the University of Illinois $365,817 on September 1, 2026, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to conduct collaborative research on spatially-resolved drivers of star formation and active galactic nuclei feedback using the KILOGAS survey. The research examines relationships between molecular gas, star formation, and black hole activity across 500 nearby galaxies observed with the Atacama Large...
The National Science Foundation Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences awarded The University of Chicago $877,411 on September 1, 2026, under the Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) to develop COLIMATE, a novel on-chip spectrometer array for the South Pole Telescope designed to enable line intensity mapping cosmology observations. COLIMATE implements line intensity mapping to detect and map distant galaxies across cosmic time by building a spectroscopic millimeter-wave focal plane using quantum-enabled detectors and advanced superconducting circuit fabrication on silicon wafers. The imaging spectrometer will be five times more sensitive than earlier versions and will be the largest camera of its kind, enabling detection of faint, unresolved galaxies to trace cosmic structure in three dimensions and test physics underlying cosmological models including inflation, dark energy, and galaxy formation over billions of years. The project includes workforce development components: graduate summer school lessons, hands-on laboratory experience for undergraduates from small colleges, and public outreach through videos and illustrations explaining line intensity mapping, to be shared at a Chicago Science Festival. Place of performance is Chicago, Illinois. The period of performance runs through August 31, 2029.
