- The University of Iowa received a $149,675 project grant award from the National Science Foundation to support work exploring the future of office work in an era of advanced artificial intelligence. Funded under the federal Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070), the grant aims to advance understanding of how computing and communications technologies are transforming work environments and tasks traditionally performed in office settings. Over the one-year period...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation awarded Iowa State University of Science and Technology $312,413 on January 1, 2027, to conduct fundamental research on safety and security in human-robot interactions under the Engineering program (CFDA 47.041). The award funds research to understand and defend against adversarial physical interactions between humans and robots, addressing the gap in current human-robot interaction safety research, which...
- The National Science Foundation Division of Computing and Communication Foundations awarded the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill $343,839 on August 1, 2026, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070) to develop AI systems capable of watching videos of real-world events, understanding what is happening at multiple levels of detail, reasoning about causes and consequences, and translating that understanding into purposeful action. The project will...
The National Science Foundation Division of Computing and Communication Foundations awarded The University of Iowa $208,605 on August 1, 2026, under the Computer and Information Science and Engineering program (CFDA 47.070) to develop human-centered, trustworthy automated video surveillance technologies that reduce operator burden while maintaining verifiable decision-making in safety-critical settings. The project will develop a framework for automated video surveillance using vision-language models capable of generating human-understandable rationales for their analyses. Three coordinated research activities will implement a verbalized learning approach enabling models to learn and explain anomalous events; spatiotemporal synthesis methods to integrate information across long video sequences in single- or multi-camera settings and describe complex events; and verification mechanisms allowing human operators to confirm the origin and assess the trustworthiness of VLM-generated reports. Performance occurs at Iowa City, Iowa through July 31, 2029. The award will also engage undergraduate and graduate students in research, integrate project materials into artificial intelligence and computer vision courses, and publicly release models, datasets, software tools, and educational resources to support workforce development and strengthen research and education capacity in Iowa and Alabama.
