This $465,000 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences program (CFDA 47.049) will support research to establish the foundational science of foldable bottlebrush polymers and networks. The principal investigator at the University of Virginia will design, synthesize, and characterize foldable bottlebrush polymers with prescribed molecular architectures. This research will elucidate the relationships between molecular structure, mesoscopic conformation, and nonlinear mechanical properties of these novel polymer materials. The project will also develop a constitutive law to describe the remarkable stress-strain behavior of foldable bottlebrush polymer networks. Finally, the research will explore the use of foldable bottlebrush polymers as photocurable resins for multi-material additive manufacturing. The outcomes of this project are expected to significantly impact polymer science, drug delivery, tissue engineering, soft robotics, and advanced manufacturing. No sub-awards are planned for this award, which has a performance period from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2028.
