The National Science Foundation (NSF), through its Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) grant program (CFDA 47.049), awarded the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) a $115,114 project grant to develop and characterize novel biomaterials made from globular proteins. The project aims to (1) experimentally characterize the mechanical response of the protein building blocks, (2) relate protein domain unfolding to the mechanical response of the protein-based materials, and (3) develop a scaling model for predicting the macroscopic behavior of these biomaterials based on their molecular components within a cross-linked network. This research seeks to advance the understanding of utilizing folded globular proteins as building blocks to produce bio-inspired solutions. The award also includes educational and outreach activities to engage students at all levels in the research areas of biology, chemistry, engineering, and physics. The project period runs from July 15, 2024 to June 30, 2027. No subawards are planned under this grant.
