The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) has received a $387,231 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS) program. The grant will support a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site that promotes participation in experimental and computational materials research.
The REU site will provide a broad range of interdisciplinary materials research experiences to undergraduate students enrolled in physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, and engineering. Students will gain hands-on training in materials synthesis, characterization, computer modeling, and research at national laboratories. The program also includes workshops on materials growth, characterization, research ethics, innovation, and applying to advanced STEM degrees. This award aims to develop a pipeline of undergraduate researchers who will become leaders in materials science and contribute to economic development and national defense. No subawards are planned under this grant.
