This $367,997 Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) program (CFDA 47.070) supports research to enhance the efficiency and scalability of next-generation mobile fronthaul networks. The award aims to develop a unified framework for efficient transmission of multi-band and coherent radio frequency (RF) signals over analog radio-over-fiber (AROF)-based mobile fronthaul, design an efficient control architecture for reconfigurable mobile fronthaul networks, and explore novel communication, spectrum sensing, and resource allocation paradigms enabled by AROF signals. The research is expected to expedite the adoption of AROF technology in mobile networks, unlock the bandwidth capabilities of fronthaul fiber infrastructure, and improve resource utilization in both wireless access networks and the underlying optical fronthaul. The project, led by Duke University, is scheduled to run from July 1, 2025 to June 30, 2030.
