This $449,999 federal Project Grant awarded by the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Engineering program (CFDA 47.041) aims to advance reactor configurations for the partial oxidation of natural gas. The University of Houston System, a Hispanic Serving Institution, will conduct this research to provide a template for transitioning catalytic chemical processes towards the use of plentiful natural gas reserves. By combining catalyst synthesis, transient kinetic studies, and reactor modeling, the project will develop a detailed, molecular-level understanding of oxygen speciation and reactivity to identify catalysts and reactors with performance exceeding the state-of-the-art. The project will also organize workshops and develop a short course on the decarbonization of the chemical industry to advance workforce development in the Gulf Coast region. This research is expected to be completed by November 30, 2027.
