This National Science Foundation (NSF) Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) project grant, awarded to the University of Mississippi, aims to advance the understanding of pulsatile turbulent flows over rough surfaces. Through $257,692 in funding from December 1, 2024 to November 30, 2029, the project will conduct high-accuracy simulations to reveal detailed flow physics and develop new predictive tools for real-time analysis and off-design adaptability. The research will integrate comprehensive engagement initiatives to spark STEM interest and cultivate skills among undergraduate students, community college students, and high schoolers in underrepresented regions. Additionally, outreach activities at a museum and grade 5-12 schools will deliver accessible fluid-related STEM resources and content to engage and educate the broader public. The improved predictive capabilities are expected to reduce design, operation, and maintenance costs across multiple industries, including aviation, energy, mechanical, meteorological, and environmental sectors.
