This $567,066 federal Project Grant award from the National Science Foundation's Biological Sciences program (CFDA 47.074) supports research to characterize the interactions between episodic ecological disturbances such as hurricanes, wildfires, and harmful algal blooms in the Alabama-Florida Gulf Coast region. The project aims to: (1) reconstruct the long-term histories of hurricane and wildfire occurrence to identify relationships between these terrestrial disturbances; (2) reconstruct the history of harmful algal blooms to understand connections between aquatic and terrestrial disturbances; and (3) examine how the interactions of these episodic disturbances impact changes in terrestrial and aquatic communities. This multi-disturbance reconstruction approach will enable novel insights into long-term disturbance dynamics and ecosystem impacts in this biodiversity hotspot region. The award period runs from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2028 and will support undergraduate and graduate student training as well as public outreach through Auburn University's extension system.
