The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a $158,689 Project Grant under the Geosciences Program (CFDA 47.050) to The Regents of the University of Colorado, dba the University of Colorado Office of Contracts and Grants Division. This 3-year research project aims to characterize the day-to-day variability of the Earth's ionosphere and thermosphere during quiet geomagnetic periods in order to improve space weather forecasting. The researchers will utilize ground-based global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations, NASA's GOLD mission data, and whole atmosphere climate model simulations to investigate the correlation between variability in ionospheric total electron content and thermospheric composition. The resulting database and numerical simulation results will serve as a reference for the aeronomy research community. The project also includes educational outreach activities to engage physics students and the public in space physics.
